The month of april :o)
Oh my goodness the month of April has flown by!
This month we:
Math: Learned about fractions 1/2 and 1/4. To help us become more familiar with these concepts we created our own pizzas. We put toppings on different fractions of the pizza. We learned a Doubles Chant to help us remember doubling facts. Then students practiced using our knowledge of doubling facts as a strategy to solve problems that were doubling plus one. We also reviewed place value, money, and graphing skills.
Reading Workshop: We have added new sight words such as, could, would, should, and because to the word wall. We identified the setting of a story in our listening center. In our writing center our prompts were spring themed. Students could write poems, lists, or narratives about the signs of spring. Our phonics lessons focused on compound words, categorizing word groups, and identifying sight words. The math center students reviewed graphing and money skills.
Social Studies: We finished our unit about China. This unit was very stimulating for the class and many students were able to share their learning at home. Students completed Little Bird Tales of facts about the Chinese culture. Then wrote reflection sentences about what they learned. * Students can share their LBT books with friends and families at home by visiting and logging in to littlebirdtales.com from the Runkle website.
Science: We began a light and shadows unit. First we discussed what we already knew about light and shadows. We read Day Light, Night Light by Franklyn M. Branley to learn about light sources. Next we conducted some light research to see what materials light shines through and which make the best shadows. We practiced writing a claim about what we learned using evidence from an experiment to prove the claim. We even had our first science talk! Students discussed an experiment as a class. They independently shared information the learned about and their evidence for thinking.
