February 24-28
Hi All,
Well February has officially come to a close. It sure did fly by!
On Monday we celebrated the 100th Day of School! It was lots of fun since we have been counting the days since the beginning of the year. Most of the activities we did throughout the day were about the day. Check out what 1H would do with $100 (there is a chart outside the classroom)
In math this week we reviewed and practiced reading graphs. We also practiced using large numbers when adding, the meaning of digits, and place value. There are two new math centers this week. One is make your own graph and the other is practicing money skills on the computer. Both have been big hits in the classroom.
This week we began learning about China. The students are so interested! We will be doing research and taking notes as a class. Each student will then compile their own notes and create a virtual book!
We created a Know/Want to Know/Learned (KWL) chart on the first day. We know a lot of things but we also have a lot of questions.
Geography was the first thing we researched and students did a great job pulling out important information from the text we read together. Our first trip to the computer lab will be next week.
In reading workshop our phonics lesson focused on adding -es to the ends of some words. We learned that plural means more than one. Many words add -s to become plural but some words, such as words that end with -x, -ss, -ch, -sh, -th, need -es at the end.
On Friday we learned about Fire Safety from a real firefighter! Some of us tried on gear and even demonstrated Stop-Drop-Roll. Each child received a packet, fire hat, and a sticker. Please return completed packets to school when you finish them.
At the end of the week we had a guest (Julie's Dad) come and speak to us about Stranger Danger. We learned not to talk to strangers and how to get help if we need it.
Enjoy your night,
Ms. Haese

Hello Families!
Last week we had an awesome turnout for Runkle School Spirit during dress up days! 1H was excited to share in the school spirit and enjoyed the exciting pep rally at the end of the day on Friday. Go Runkle!
We began our data unit in math this past week and had a lot of fun graphing all of the students who dressed up! We have used tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs so far. Next week we will practice reading the charts for information and using the graphs to answer questions.
In reading workshop we focused on new sight words and then added them to our word wall. We are practicing money skills in the math center and made our 4P reading buddies valentines in the writing center. Next week instead of reading groups I will be meeting with students to do a reading assessment.
In social studies and writing workshop we focused on completing our Me on a Map book and our globes. I introduced a writing self checklist called Smiley Sentences (in addition to 3 Star Drawings) to help students check their writing.
They are checking to see if:
**New this week!
We had our first Friday Funzie guests! Manju and Anand (Deven's parents) were able to come in and share some family stories and read The Giving Tree to the class.
Sonal (Mia's mom) helped us make a class quilt. Each child has a square that they decorated. I will be hanging the quilt up when it is all tied together!
Thanks so much for coming in! And if you would like to be part of Friday Funzies checkout our signup at

They are checking to see if:
- Sentences begin with uppercase.
- They have end punctuation marks.
- There are spaces between words.
- Sight words are spelled correctly.
- Writing is neat and they did their best.
- Their name is one their paper.

Hello All!
This week was very busy in our classroom! We have been finishing up a couple of units and most of the week was spent working on culminating projects.
Our mapping unit is coming to a close and with it we are using our knowledge about maps and the world to create paper mache globes. We had lots of fun getting messy with paste and paint so far! Due to the snow day we will be putting our finishing touches on our globes next week.
In reading workshop we have been learning about ending word patterns. (-own, -on, -ate, etc.) We work daily on writing and spelling sight words, coral reading and fluency when reading poems. The writing center focused on the second page of our "Me on a Map" books. We look forward to sharing them with you soon!
Our math unit on "Larger Numbers" finished up this week. We have taken a good look at numbers on the number line and how they are organized and can be grouped. We have played many games that focused on grouping numbers by ten, counting by tens, and how dimes and pennies can show the same numbers.
And the best part of our week was presenting Owen, Chrysanthemum, and Wemberly Worried! I am so proud of all of their hard work. Practicing their lines, patiently working together, and reading aloud to so many parents without any hesitation. It was wonderful to hear!
Enjoy your weekends and see you on Monday in your pajamas!
