Week 8
Writer's Workshop:
This week we continued working on our unit on illustrations. Students have been focusing on making decisions about their illustrations while writing.
- Illustrators draw many details about people in their drawings.
- Illustrators use expressions to tell how a person is feeling.
- Illustrators use backgrounds to tell where a story takes place.
Reading Workshop:
- This week the our work board centers included science (observing leaves), writing (listing information about pumpkins), listening ("There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves"), ABC (Go Fish with words), poetry (various fall poems), read-around-the-room, and quiet reading.
- Reading logs will be sent home weekly and can be filled out throughout the following week. These logs are not required but to represent the hard work you already do :o) Happy Reading!
Social Studies:
Students were excited to begin our social studies unit on Communities. We spent time discussing what a community is, types of communities we know about and some of the activities and rules in various communities.
Math:
This week we began telling time by the hour. Most students have a solid grasp on this concept and we will be practicing telling the time throughout the day.
We also began writing in our math journals. This is a great opportunity for students to practice explaining how they know an answer.
Handwriting:
We reviewed our uppercase letters and this week we will begin focusing on lowercase letters. Please still watch for reversals when writing numbers at home.
